Trip to Ireland
Day 2 - Dublin to Cabra Castle, Cavan - Friday, November 11, 2022
Happy Veterans Day!
Landed in Dublin around 4:30 am and made our way
through customs and on to the Enterprise car rental spot. We had to wait
a little while until they opened and there was a short line ahead of us but it didn't take too long. We were able to
get out of Dublin while it was still dark. The driving on the left wasn't bad
but the roads were another story. It didn't help that it was still dark. After
we got off the M1, a main highway, the roads were narrow, twisty and curvy with
absolutely no shoulder. Cabra Castle was only an hour away from Dublin but it
took us longer and seemed like a white-knuckle eternity. Cabra Castle dates back to the 18th century but much of it was in ruins and was rebuilt in 1808 although the courtyard survived. We got to the castle early and had breakfast. The castle was impressive but we were staying in the
Lodges which was like a regular hotel room. We took a little walk around the
grounds but since our room still wasn't ready we took a nap in the car. By end
of nap time our room was ready so we unloaded our stuff. We wanted to go to a
town about an hour away so we hopped back in the car headed to Droghega. We
never made it though. Those narrow roads with no shoulders flattened our tire.
It was interesting trying to explain where we were on some no name road.
Thankfully the tire guy came in about an hour, fixed our tire in 5 min. and we
headed back to the hotel. Enough excitement for 1 day. We were also thankful
that we had taken out the VIP insurance. After all that it was time for a
drink. We also had a nice meal in the bar - some pureed veggie soup, a veggie
burrito and cheese plate - yum. It had been an exhausting day with little sleep
and I was out by 7:30.
